Diaries, 8 written by Charles and one by Virginia. Charles' diaries begin when he is a student at the University of Minnesota and discuss his classes, his social life and his discussions with his father. He also makes frequent lists of things he wants to accomplish for character building. He philosophizes on many aspects of life such as what a perfect woman should be and how a gentleman conducts his life. He describes his summer work for the city of Chicago. Gives a daily account of expenditures. After his marriage he writes about his life with Virginia, the loss of their first child, and the birth of and joy over their son, their friends and their social life, the loss of two more babies and the adoption of Patricia. He also writes extensivly about his work, giving details of his plans for the crematorium with drawings and his work on the engine. He writes about the problems with the lawsuits, patent squabbles and financial woes of the company. He is quite candid when writing about people. He also discusses his lack of work and inablility to find it. During the armed take over by the government of Montogomery Ward's in 1944, he writes a daily detailed account of activities and the prevailing thoughts about Mr. Avery who was the head of Ward's at the time. Some years have only a few entries and many years are not covered. Virginia's diary, 1917, is kept intermittently and mostly discusses activites related to her husband, baby or other family.
